Debt Negotiation Services: Tips for Debt Relief

by admin

Over the past 10 years the economy has taken a nose dive in the United States and many people have lost their jobs.  Those same people had credit card balances and other debt that could no longer be managed without income and as a result they sunk deep into debt.  Being chased down by creditors who are often nasty on the phone, having property repossessed or homes foreclosed on are an extremely emotional experience that can leave consumers feeling like there is no way out.  There are a variety of companies out there, however that is debt negotiation services that help borrowers clean up the mess.  If you are in debt and don’t really have a way out, some of the suggestions in this article may be of use to you.  It is important to note that persons must first be employed or have some type of income to be able to use debt consolidation or negotiation services.  In other words, you have to make some type of money to even begin paying off a negotiated debt.

One of the first places a consumer should look for debt relief help when they realize they are in trouble is an attorney’s office that specializes in working with creditors.  Most people don’t want to call an attorney because they are notoriously expensive however you may end up paying the same amount to an attorney depending on your particular situation as you would a debt negotiation service.  The benefit here is that consumers will avoid all the fluff that a negotiation service often portrays and deal with a professional that knows the law.  Attorneys often wield a little more legal power than does a non-legally oriented debt service.  They can also be better at dealing with creditor’s representatives who are also often attorneys themselves.  The best reason to use an attorney is that it is easy to see if they are reputable through checking their status through your state’s law bar and better business bureau.  Many debt services over the past years in contrast have been discovered as being non-reputable or outright scams.

If you don’t like attorneys or for whatever other reason don’t want to call one, there are arrays of debt negotiation services that will essentially accomplish the same task for you as an attorney would.  When searching for help from one of these services, you will find that there are dozens and dozens f companies out there offering services to help minimize your debt.  It is important to tread carefully as many of these companies are scams and will charge you a fee only to do nothing for your situation.  It should also be noted that credit counseling or debt management is not the same as a debt negotiation service.  These services help consumers more with planning a budget so that money can be allocated to different creditors every month.  Debt negotiation involves the company negotiating with the creditor to lower the total amount owed and except one to three payments for the entire amount the third party company can secure, much like a lawyer would do.  These services often charge a fee to create an account with them, monthly fees as well as a final value fee for the money supposedly saved through the company’s services.

Although there are some reputable companies out there that can help with debt problems and lower your total debt amounts for you, it is often too difficult to tell if the company has your best interest at heart.  If you have a friend or family member who has had a good experience you will probably be okay; however, if you are unsure of a particular company it is better to hire an attorney or try another route such as debt counseling or consolidation.
